A Self-Examination Guide for Marine Davit Systems

Lifeboat is one of the important components of ship's life-saving equipment, and there are a lot of technical articles on the requirements of lifeboat convention and related technical articles. This article is based on the self-inspection of lifeboats and their landing load releasing devices, and takes the common ones during safety inspection as an example to introduce in detail how to carry out the self-inspection of inverted boom marine davit systems.

Brakes

There are usually two types of braking devices for inverted davit systems, according to the different braking principles, there are usually holding brake and friction pad type. The working principle of holding brake is to drive the eccentric wheel by the rotation of the brake hammer, so that the brake plate will hold on to the brake wheel, and the brake will be realized under the block's blocking. Friction pad type is when the brake device hammer rotation, inward pressure brake pads, internal and external friction pads are tightly pressed together through the gear drive, and ultimately by the five-star one-way stopping device to realize the brakes.

Dinghy Skid and Chain Ring

During the actual inspection, it is more common to find serious corrosion defects on davit skids and chain rings due to lack of maintenance. According to the specification, when the corrosion exceeds 10% of the original size, they need to be replaced. When some crew members replaced them on their own or added loading and unloading buckles, there were cases where the dimensions did not match the original dimensions. Self-inspection of davit slips and chain rings should focus on the following aspects:

  • Check their structural strength, whether there is serious corrosion, especially focusing on whether there is a reduction in size at one point of the chain ring.

  • Whether the size of the replacement davit chain ring is consistent with the design size.

  • Whether the T-hook of the davit skid is hanging on the boom.

Guide Pulleys and Safety Hooks

The main body of marine davit systems should be inspected to see if its structural strength is damaged. For parts such as rusted through and fractured parts, repairs should not be carried out by means of cladding, etc. Self-inspection of the guiding pulleys and safety hooks (crossbar) should focus on the following aspects.

  • Whether there is serious corrosion, rust through, fracture, etc., especially to focus on the parts covered by the nameplate.

  • Whether the guide pulley is active and able to rotate normally.

  • Whether the safety hook (crossbar) can be easily released.

Self-inspection of lifeboats and their landing load releasing devices is a crucial part in the safe operation of ships. We would like to emphasize that self-inspection is not only a guarantee for the safe operation of the ship, but also a kind of respect for the life safety of the crew and passengers. Through rigorous and meticulous self-inspection, we can find and eliminate potential safety hazards in time, providing a solid guarantee for the safe navigation of the ship.
